Applications to Health
What we have learned from this theory is that it proposes a multifaceted structure in which beliefs in bettering oneself operate together with goals, expectations, and perceived environmental obstacles in the regulation of motivation, behavior, and well-being. Belief in one’s ability to exhibit control is a common method in which influences affect health. This belief affects each of the basic processes of personal change—whether people may consider changing their health habits, whether they decide to enact any sort of motivation and perseverance needed to succeed, their ability to recover from setbacks and falling off the wagon, and how well they maintain the changes they have made. Health is a social matter, not just a solitary one. A comprehensive approach to health promotion also requires changing the practices of social systems that have widespread effects on human health. A great example of the Social Cognitive Theory being used in Health practice would be the simple aspect of physical health and making that change. The three factors absolutely play a part in making a change. One has to be able to interact on a personal level with both your environment and behavior- to know what you have available and what your attitude is about what you want to change. By observing someone making a change in his or her life (for example, watching someone change his or her diet and hitting the gym), one is likely to emulate that course of action. If you have a personal relationship with that model of change, you would be more likely to change yourself. This is why people gravitate towards celebrities and famous people who remind them of the best in themselves.
