So, All In All...
The social cognitive theory believes there are 3 factors that influence a person: personal factors, environmental factors and behavior. Personal factors influence behavior by their thoughts and actions. Personal factors are also influenced by environmental factors because the environment has a set of social influences that play influence to personal factors. Then, of course, comes the behavior. Depending on the environmental reaction of the behavior, it gives either a negative or positive response to the individual in question, which may or may not repeat that behavior. Between social influences in the environment and personal beliefs, the resulting outcome is the behavior of the subject.
The social cognitive theory was originally found by Albert Bandura, a Canadian psychologist, while trying to understand the influence of human thoughts, effect, and action. It has continued to evolve from that and the theory has become broader in the idea that learned actions are rewarded with a positive reinforcement. Now, not only is looked at from a psychological perspective, but is also used in the health field to look at how lifestyle changes are made.
This theory helps us understand why actions are made. We can also use it to make changes. Changes in our environment can change the influence or social expectations that put pressure on an individuals choice. There are also other influences that play a role in the social cognitive theory, such as motivation and positive outcomes.
This theory has many options to be able to apply it to health. the core belief is on personal change. This can be either through health habits, physical activity, or disease prevention. Recently, this model has been used to help prevention of HIv/AIDS, drug abuse, and alcohol on young adults. It also is looking at environmental factors relating to behavior problems in children and coping mechanisms for stress.
